January 2nd

Now, that was fun! Our first Rose Parade (the 130th) in person was amazing! The weather started out a bit cool (48 degrees), but the forecasted winds didn’t materialize until after the parade ended. It got into the 60’s during the parade and the sun warmed us from behind all morning. We were about 2 miles from the start of the parade and the place where the TV cameras were set up, so we didn’t make any of the footage, but we had a great view of the parade.

We had a great view of the Lutheran Hour float as it went past. Picking out the roses that we helped prepare for the float was a special part of the experience. It was the only Christian-themed float in the parade and was well received by the crowd around us.

We understand that one of the floats caught fire at the corner ahead of us and it caused the last few units of the parade to be delayed to the point where people had to be chased off the street so that they could finish. That’s never happened before and our guide also said that he’d never seen the pooper-scoopers be such a hit in the parade. They really put some life into what could have been a pretty ugly job.

It has been a great experience and we met some wonderful people in our group. We’re headed for home today and will get back late tonight.
